This September the 27th kick start your healthy lifestyle with some exercise!

Frequent physical activity improves health and fitness and may reduce your risk for some diseases.

In 2008 new physical activity guidelines for Americans were released, with physical activity goals that you could achieve with different amounts of activities each week.

The new guidelines state that Adults need at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (brisk walking) and at least two days a week devoted to muscle-strengthening activities that will work out your major muscle groups.

OR

One hour and 15 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (jogging or running) and 2 days of strengthening activities.

OR

An equivalent mix of the above with 2 days of strengthening activities.

For healthy pregnant or postpartum women, the guidelines are at least 150 minutes per week or moderate intensity activity.

The guidelines are quite flexible, you do not have to do the listed times in one go, you can break them down into smaller blocks of exercise. Perhaps exercising just 20 minutes a day, or during breaks or your lunch hour.

If you are concerned about your overall fitness, or the effects of this level of exercise on your body talk to your Doctor.
